Essential Tasks for Effective Landscape Maintenance

Keep your outdoor space thriving year-round with these expert landscape care essentials.

Lawn Mowing

We keep your lawn healthy and neat all season long with regular mowing.

    • Mowing Frequency: Mowing visits are scheduled weekly during the peak growing season and as appropriate based on precipitation, temperatures, and seasonality.
    • Mowing Height: We adjust mowing height depending on the time of season and rate of grass growth.
      • Early Season: When the grass growth rate is high, the mowing height is set to 3.75 inches.
      • Mid-Season: Under normal conditions, mowing height will be as low as 3.5 inches.
      • Drought: Mowing height increases to 3.75 inches to reduce stress on the grass.
      • Late Fall: After frost, we lower the mowing height to 3.00 – 3.25 inches for the final mowing of the season.
    • String Trimming: Each mowing visit includes string trimming along driveways, sidewalks, and bed edges. We also trim around trees, posts, obstacles, and other areas that cannot be safely reached with a mower..
    • Surface Clearing: After mowing and trimming, our crews use forced-air blowers to remove all freshly cut grass from non-turf areas.

Tine Rake Dethatching

Performed on its own or as part of our Spring Clean-Up, our Spring Lawn Dethatching Service ensures your lawn has a healthy start to the growing season. This early spring service utilizes a lawn mower-mounted tine rake dethatcher to reduce thatch and remove embedded debris that can block air and water from reaching the turfgrass roots. For most lawns, annual thatch removal is recommended to prevent excessive build-up and promote healthy turf growth.

Spring Clean-Up

Spring clean-ups are essential for revitalizing your property after winter and preparing it for spring. This service includes removing leaves, twigs, and other debris, as well as cutting back perennials that were kept for winter interest. We then perform a thorough tine rake dethatching of the lawn to remove dead grass and thatch.  Spring cleanups help your lawn receive sunlight and air, promoting new growth and a healthier landscape overall.

For larger or more complex properties, we may perform this service over two visits. Spring cleanup is billed at the time of service or can be included in a prepayment option at the beginning of the season.

Mulch Installation

Mulching instantly enhances the look of your property while providing many functional benefits that promote healthy plant growth. Our high-quality, brown-dyed, shredded hardwood bark mulch:

  • Retains moisture to keep your plants hydrated
  • Acts as a natural weed barrier
  • Regulates soil temperature for optimal growth
  • Adds essential nutrients as it breaks down, improving soil structure

While this type of mulch is our standard offering, we can accommodate other types upon request.

We recommend annual topdressing to maintain a fresh look and ensure adequate coverage. Our team is also available to address any mulch buildup or washout, ensuring your landscape stays looking its best.

Trench Bed Edging

This service creates a crisp, natural definition between lawn and mulch beds and helps prevent grass encroachment. For landscape beds without other edging materials, trench bed edging results in a well-maintained, elegant appearance that enhances curb appeal.

Sidewalk Edging

Removing overgrown turf from along sidewalks, walkways, curbs, and any other concrete edges is an excellent way to keep your landscape looking sharp. Regular monthly edging maintains that clean aesthetic all season long, but we also offer one-time edging services to tame turf areas that have overstepped their boundaries.

Ornamental Shrub Pruning

Our pruning services are tailored to each property, focusing on maintaining the health and beauty of your shrubs and small trees. Mid-summer pruning controls excessive growth and maintains the shape of your shrubs during the peak growing season. Fall pruning services prepare deciduous shrubs for dormancy and vigorous spring growth. We also offer custom pruning packages to address specific needs, including careful hand pruning for unique plantings.

Fall Clean-Up

Fall clean-ups focus on preparing your property for the dormancy of colder months. This service includes the removal of all leaves and sticks from your lawn and landscape beds. Expired perennial growth, aside from ornamental grass, which is left for winter interest and plant health, is sheared back. As a finishing touch, your lawn will receive a final mowing, using a bagging attachment to collect debris, and detailed string-trimming around the edges, leaving the lawn in pristine condition. The collected debris is then disposed of off-site, allowing you peace of mind that your property is fully ready for winter.

Fall cleanup is typically performed once per year, with larger properties requiring two visits. It is billed at the time of service or available through prepayment at the start of the season.

FAQ's

Landscape management encompasses a broader scope of activities aimed at creating, planning, and overseeing the overall design and health of a landscape. It includes strategic planning, planting design, and long-term care. In contrast, landscape maintenance focuses on the routine tasks required to keep an existing landscape looking its best, such as mowing, pruning, and fertilizing.

Typical maintenance activities for landscaping include mowing lawns, trimming shrubs and hedges, weed control in landscape beds, applying mulch, fertilizing plants, and seasonal clean-up tasks like leaf and organic debris removal. These activities ensure that the landscape remains healthy and aesthetically pleasing.

Sustainable landscape maintenance refers to practices that promote ecological health while minimizing environmental impact. This can include using organic fertilizers, conserving water through efficient irrigation systems, choosing native plants that require less water and maintenance, and implementing integrated pest management to reduce chemical use.

Planning a low-maintenance yard involves selecting plants that are native to the region or drought-resistant varieties that require less water and care. Designing with hardscaping elements like stones or pathways can reduce the area needing upkeep. Additionally, grouping plants with similar needs together can simplify watering and care routines.

Stone mulch is the most low-maintenance mulch option. While it is more expensive to install initially and requires an inorganic landscape fabric for weed suppression, the only maintenance required is the removal of debris from the voids between the stones via a forced air blower. If not removed, this debris becomes a medium for weeds to take root in. Blowing out stone beds should be performed at least annually, ideally twice yearly, and included in our seasonal clean-up services. Removing and replacing the stone mulch may be required if this maintenance is neglected for too long.

Mowing typically occurs on a weekly basis, but the schedule can be adjusted based on weather conditions, such as wet lawns or extended dry periods. We always prioritize the health of your lawn.

No, sidewalk edging is a separate service from mowing and string trimming. If you’d like your sidewalks or driveways edged for a clean look, we offer this as an additional service.

Not at all! If it rains after an application, it won’t ruin the treatment. In fact, rain can even help it absorb more effectively into the soil.

Yes, granular fertilizer can be applied even if there’s a layer of leaves on the lawn. The fertilizer will still be 100% effective and will break down as the leaves decompose.

No, our weed control service is specifically for turf areas. It does not include spraying weeds in concrete cracks or planting beds. These areas require separate attention, and we’re happy to help with that as well.
