Aerating your lawn can be beneficial, especially if you’re dealing with issues like poor drainage, soil compaction, or thatch buildup. It’s a cost-effective method to enhance your lawn’s health and appearance without the need for patching or reseeding. However, if your lawn is generally in good condition, aeration may not be required.

The best months to aerate your lawn are typically in the spring or fall, depending on your grass type. For cool-season grasses, early fall is ideal, while warm-season grasses benefit from aeration in late spring to early summer.

You can tell if your lawn needs aeration if it feels compacted, has poor drainage, shows signs of stress during dry periods, or has a spongy feel when walked on. Additionally, if you notice that water pools on the surface rather than soaking in, it’s likely time for aeration.

While aeration can help improve soil structure and promote healthy growth, it may not completely fix a bumpy lawn. Aeration can help alleviate some surface issues over time, but for significant bumps or unevenness, additional soil leveling or topdressing might be necessary.

Rocks and organic mulch both have their pros and cons. Rocks can provide excellent drainage, depending on the type and quality of underlayment, and do not decompose, requiring less frequent replacement. However, they don’t improve soil quality like organic mulch does. The choice between them depends on your specific landscaping needs and aesthetic preferences.

After aeration, it’s best to stay off the lawn for about 24 to 48 hours. This allows the soil plugs to break down and ensures that the benefits of aeration can take full effect without disruption. However, light foot traffic is generally okay after this period.
