Every lawn mowing includes the following: Complete mowing of the property, string trimming around all edging, trees, posts, etc., and removal of freshly cut grass from all paved and non-desirable areas with a power blower.
Core Aeration – Having your lawn aerated is the best natural way to improve the overall health of your lawn. Core aeration removes small cores or “plugs” from the lawn, which break back down into the turf after a week or so. These plugs encourage microbial decomposition of undisturbed thatch to help accelerate thatch breakdown. These plugs help revive compacted soil and completely puncture thatch build up in concentrated areas. Aeration allows water, oxygen, sunlight and fertilizer to penetrate the turf and reach the root system while improving health and encouraging growth and expansion. Aeration can be done any time the lawn is soft and in an active growing state (mainly late spring or early fall) and we recommend aerating on an annual basis to consistently encourage a healthy lawn.
Dethatching –Dethatching is the process of removing thatch build up from the base of the lawn in order to allow moisture, sunlight and fertilizers to better reach the soil. Thatch build up is dead, un-decomposed grass stems and roots accompanied by other small debris “trapped” above the soil base creating a barrier that reduces the absorption rate these necessary nutrients. It can also harbor insects and encourage disease. While thatch build up is a natural process for lawns, excessive build up is a very common problem and can easily be diagnosed. Simply use your fingers to move apart your lawn and see how much dead grass has collected before you reach the soil. If you have more than about ½ inch, your thatch layer is preventing your lawn from looking its best. We use two methods for removing thatch build up and usually do it in the early spring:
- Mower mounted tine rake dethatcher (most common): We mount a dethatcher on the front our lawn mower and the dethatcher tines pick and pull out thatch. Simultaneously, the mower “vacuums” up the debris into its bagger. Because the mower blades are engaged, an added bonus of this method is that the lawn also gets cut and bagged. This method of dethatching is less expensive than the following method and we recommend doing it on an annual basis every spring, especially to thicker lawns.
- Rotary operated dethatcher – This method is much more invasive to the lawn. While the build up of thatch must be addressed if it is a problem, only severe thatch build up is recommended for this method. It is the same concept as the mower mounted machine, thatch is agitated by small blades and then pulled up. It is then vacuumed up and discarded.
Sidewalk, Curb and Driveway Edging –This service defines the concrete borders of your lawn and gives it a clean manicured look. Turf overgrowth (both grass and soil) onto concrete is natural and can take away from the overall appearance of your lawn. Edging removes this overgrown turf and gives your lawn a crisp, clean appearance. The more often you edge, the less overgrowth there is. This makes is easier for us and is why we offer edging as a monthly service at drastically reduced rates. It also keeps your edges looking good all season, rather than once or twice a year.
Overseeding & Slit-Seeding – These services incorporate new grass seed into an existing lawn to thicken the turf. Overseeding is the process of spreading grass seed over the lawn with a spreader and watering the seed into the soil. We usually aerate the lawn at least two times before spreading seed in order to encourage more seed-to-soil contact. If select areas have poor grass establishment, additional top soil may be required to help the lawn look its best. Slit-Seeding is the process of introducing grass seed directly into the soil by using a machine to cut rows of small trenches in the soil and physically place grass seed in the trench before covering it back up with top soil. This helps ensure seed placement and is usually used in high runoff areas.
Timing and proper care are essential for the establishment of any new seed. The ideal time to plant new seed is in the late spring or early fall when temperatures are moderate. Applying a starter fertilizer high in phosphorous encourages early root development and expansion (Dane County’s phosphorous ban in lawn fertilizers excludes applications for the establishment of new grass seed). Lawn Renovation & Restoration – While lawns in the Midwestern states tend to be considered among the best in the country, they tend to take a lot of abuse. Our climate changes drastically throughout the year and is experiencing more and more droughts and heavy rain periods. This means lawns need regular care to thrive and sometimes, depending on their unique characteristics, may need to be renovated or restored. A general rule in the green industry is that if a lawn needs more than 50% restoration, it may be time to start over and plant a new one. When renovating a lawn, we generally select from several methods of care (dethatching, aerating, etc.) to best suit the individual lawn.
